Agile Web Development with Rails

Agile Web Development with Rails made for very inspiring reading. Ruby on Rails goes in the opposite direction of where most people are taking web development these days: simplifying development as much as possible.

Although it is certainly designed around commercial reliability and scalability, whether or not Rails will really take off in the commercial world is open to speculation: Rails itself could be a nicer programming language, a lot goes on at runtime behind the scenes that it would be nice to know about.

That doesn't matter though, I still recommend reading this book, it is really relaxing and enjoyable to read and it makes you want to use Rails.

My opinion of where Rails will go? Well it should definitely be a seriously considered framework for people currently programming web applications in PHP!

Make the Vista Alt+TAB more like the Mac task switcher

I was really excited to here about Flip 3D but was a bit disappointed when I actually saw it. The previews are big, and they are live which is great, but they are all on top of each other and only use one monitor -- not great. I wanted something a bit like when you press F10 on a Mac.

The closest I have managed to get is some registry tweaks to make Alt+TAB behave a bit like I want, here is what I have come up with:

REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AltTab] "OverlayIconPx"=dword:00000064 "OverlayIconDXPx"=dword:00000000 "OverlayIconDYPx"=dword:00000000 "ThumbSpacingXPx"=dword:00000014 "ThumbSpacingYPx"=dword:00000014 "SideMarginPx"=dword:0a000000 "BottomMarginPx"=dword:00000064 "MinThumbSizePcent"=dword:00000064 "MinWidthPx"=dword:0000015e "TopMarginPx"=dword:00000258 "MaxThumbSizePx"=dword:000007d0 "MaxIconSizePx"=dword:0000015e "TextBottomPx"=dword:000001f4

It is not great, the way it spans monitors could be more tidy, if the tops of the monitors are not aligned some of the live previews go off screen and the previews could be bigger. However it is, in my opinion, better than the default Alt+TAB behaviour.

My New Desk

Last weekend I had Nick and Caz visit and we did some DIY. I now have a new (homemade) desk and a coffee area (that will become a dining area as soon as I get some new table legs!)

My New Home

I recently moved into a new flat in Redhill so that I can take up a job in Horley. Here are some pictures of my new home:

The lounge:
For now I am making do with using the better of my monitors as a TV, it is a bit small but unless I buy another Xbox 360 it is the only way that I can watch Media Center TV and video. The small screen is made up for by the audio though; I finally have a room big enough to make correct use of my 7.1 surround sound.

My (mini) data centre:
This is my favorite part. The estate agent tried to see it to me as an office, but he would want to work cropped up in there? I immediately knew what I was going to do with this room: store my computer in their and run monitor and speaker cables around the corner. No more background hum for me!

The hallway:
A lot of cupboards, and an entry phone system.

The kitchen:
I decided to get all new appliances, going for the black and chrome effect.

The bedroom:
Check out my new TV, it's actually only 32" but it looks plenty big enough when you're sat on the bed watching it. It is connected to the HDTV output of my Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 is connected to my wireless network and acts as a Media Center Extender for my computer, allowing me to watch my videos, and play/pause/rewind etc. live TV.
